Continued: The Principles of Leave No Trace

The Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics is a national non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and inspiring responsible outdoor recreation through education, research and partnerships. Leave No Trace builds awareness, appreciation and respect for our wildlands. You can read more about Leave No Trace and how to become a member by visiting www.lnt.org

Principle nr 5: Minimize Campfire Impact.

  • Campfires can cause lasting impacts to the backcountry. Use a lightweight stove for cooking and enjoy a candle lantern for light.
  • Where fires are permitted, use established fire rings, fire pans, or mound fires.
  • Keep fires small. Only use sticks from the ground that can be broken by hand.
  • Burn all wood and coals to ash, put out campfires completely, then scatter cool ashes.

How can you make a difference?

Educate yourself about the use of camp fires before you go out on a camping trip. This applies to both backcountry and frontcountry camp fires. Camp fires that are started in inappropriate areas, or under uneducated conditions, can quickly get out of control and you can cause more damage than you can imagine. Follow the principles of Leave No Trace next time you go on a backpacking trip, or simply set up camp at a local state park, and share your new knowledge with fellow campers.
